Memory and learning represent fundamental operations of the cerebral cortex, with the hippocampus playing a pivotal role in these processes. Synaptic plasticity is currently recognized as a primary mechanism through which neurons acquire and retain information. Recently, numerous investigations have broadened our comprehension regarding hippocampal synaptic plasticity. Nevertheless, the integrated functions of diverse hippocampal sectors and various types of synaptic modifications remain largely unexplored. This article provides an overview of contemporary research concerning hippocampal synaptic plasticity in cognition. Initially, it describes the primary architecture and roles of the hippocampus while clarifying how distinct hippocampal segments contribute to memory consolidation. Subsequently, it delineates the general concepts of synaptic plasticity before concentrating on the molecular underpinnings of long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD). This manuscript will also discuss the synergy between these two forms of plasticity in modulating neuronal circuits and facilitating mnemonic processes. In total, it is evident that learning and memory emerge from synchronized activities across multiple hippocampal components and equilibrium shifts in synaptic states. This research elucidates how synaptic modifications in the hippocampus link to cognitive functions. It serves as the foundation for subsequent inquiries into cerebral memory impairments. Prospective investigations will examine the associations among all hippocampal subfields and analyze the molecular mechanisms of synaptic plasticity within normal and pathological cerebral states.
