Abstract

This study investigates the emergence, development, and current status of virtual currencies, using Bitcoin as a representative case study, to examine market dynamics, regulatory challenges, and future development prospects. The analysis reveals that Bitcoin dominates the global virtual currency market with approximately 63.2% market share. The market exhibits significant price volatility, and the sector faces substantial compliance challenges including money laundering risks, high energy consumption from Proof-of-Work mining, and inadequate regulatory frameworks in many jurisdictions. Conclusion: While virtual currencies offer enhanced transaction efficiency and growing potential as financial assets, their sustainable development requires coordinated international regulatory frameworks, continued technological optimization to reduce energy consumption, and strengthened user security measures to prevent criminal exploitation.
